He Rose to Fame—But His Mother’s Past Cast a Long Shadow

From a young age, Pattie Mallette was drawn to performance, appearing on local shows like Romper Room by age nine. But her early love for the arts was dimmed by a turbulent childhood. At 15, she began dating Jeremy Bieber. By 16, she had run away, surviving on theft and drugs to make it through each day.
Her dreams faded beneath the weight of pain no child should bear.

At 17, overwhelmed by trauma and despair, Pattie attempted suicide. She spent time in a mental institution, where she underwent Christian conversion therapy. After being released, she reconnected with Jeremy—and soon discovered she was pregnant. On March 1, 1994, Justin Bieber was born in London, Ontario.
That tiny heartbeat gave her a new reason to fight.

Though the relationship with Jeremy didn’t last, Pattie faced single motherhood with quiet strength. She poured her energy into raising Justin and nurturing his talents. In 2007, she signed him up for the Stratford Star talent show. His performance of “So Sick” earned second place—but opened far greater doors.
She was no longer surviving—she was building a future for them both.

Pattie posted the video to YouTube, unknowingly launching a global career. Her belief in Justin never wavered, despite her own painful past. That strength shaped both their lives. Behind every spotlight, there’s often a story of quiet, unwavering resilience—and Pattie’s is one worth remembering.
She may not stand on stage, but her courage built the platform.
