How Often Should You Change Your Underwear? Experts Explain What Matters

Changing your underwear at least once a day is a simple hygiene habit that can help keep you comfortable and reduce odors. Because underwear stays close to the skin, it can collect sweat, oils, and natural moisture throughout the day. When moisture remains against the skin for too long, it can contribute to irritation and discomfort.

For most people, changing into a clean pair every 24 hours is sufficient. However, you may need to change more frequently after exercising, sweating heavily, or during periods of increased discharge. During menstruation, changing underwear as needed can also help maintain comfort and freshness.

The material and fit of your underwear can make a difference as well. Breathable fabrics, such as cotton, can allow better airflow and help manage moisture. Very tight underwear or materials that trap heat may increase friction and discomfort, particularly when worn for extended periods.

Proper washing is just as important as changing regularly. Underwear should be thoroughly cleaned with an appropriate detergent and completely dried before being worn again. If your skin is sensitive, fragrance-free products may be preferable, especially if scented detergents cause irritation.

Ultimately, there is no complicated routine required: wear a clean pair each day and change sooner when your circumstances call for it. Paying attention to sweat, moisture, comfort, and skin irritation can help you decide when an extra change is appropriate. Simple, consistent habits can go a long way toward maintaining everyday hygiene and comfort.
