Try These Simple Hacks When Your Key Fob Stops Working

Walking up to your car and getting no response from the key fob can be frustrating, but it does not always mean there is a serious problem. In many cases, the fob simply has a weak or dead battery. Before calling for help, there are a few simple steps you can try to regain access to your vehicle.

Most modern key fobs contain a hidden mechanical key. Look for a small release button or slider on the side or back of the fob, remove the metal key, and use it to unlock the driver’s door manually. If the battery is weak rather than completely dead, holding the fob close to your chin while pressing the button may sometimes help extend its signal range.

If you get inside but the vehicle will not start, there may still be an emergency option. Many push-button vehicles can detect the fob’s built-in chip even when its battery is depleted. Try holding the fob directly against the start button or the designated location described in your owner’s manual while pressing the brake and start button.

Preparation can also prevent future frustration. Keep a replacement coin-cell battery, such as a CR2032 if your vehicle requires one, and avoid exposing the fob to extreme heat or cold. Your owner’s manual is also worth checking because emergency procedures vary between makes and models.

The next time your key fob stops responding, try to stay calm. Use the hidden key, follow the vehicle’s emergency-start instructions, and replace the battery when necessary. A few simple preparations can make an unexpected key-fob failure much easier to handle.
