During hot summer months, you may notice a small bowl of vinegar sitting near a window. While it might seem like an unusual household habit, vinegar can be useful for dealing with two common problems: fruit flies and lingering odors. It is inexpensive, readily available, and easy to use.

Apple cider vinegar is particularly useful for attracting fruit flies. Warm temperatures, ripe fruit, food scraps, and open windows can make these tiny insects more noticeable. To create a simple trap, place a small amount of apple cider vinegar in a bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Poke several small holes in the covering so the flies can get inside but have difficulty escaping.

White vinegar can also be used as a basic household odor-control method. Its acetic acid content can interact with some odor-causing compounds, although a bowl of vinegar should not be considered a substitute for proper ventilation or an air purifier. It may be placed near areas where cooking smells, garbage odors, or other unpleasant scents are lingering.

The best results still come from keeping the area clean. Dispose of food scraps promptly, clean spills, store ripe fruit properly, keep garbage containers closed, and make sure window screens are in good condition. Apple cider vinegar is generally more useful for fruit-fly traps, while white vinegar is commonly used for household cleaning and odor-related purposes.

There is also an important safety precaution: never mix vinegar with bleach or other cleaning chemicals, as dangerous fumes can result. Keep vinegar traps and bowls away from children and pets. Used sensibly, this simple household trick can be a low-cost way to address some of the small problems that become more noticeable during summer.
