At first, an unusual orange glow coming from a wall might look like a reflection, a small indicator light, or something harmless. But when the glow continues and appears to be coming from around an electrical outlet, it should not be ignored. In one case, a homeowner noticed the strange light and wisely decided not to investigate by taking the outlet apart.
Instead, they switched off the circuit at the breaker panel and contacted a qualified electrician. When the outlet was safely removed, the electrician discovered a loose electrical connection inside the electrical box. The poor connection had increased electrical resistance, generating heat and damaging the insulation around one of the wires.
The orange glow was apparently coming from inside the electrical box, where the wiring had become dangerously hot. What initially looked like a strange curiosity was actually a potential electrical hazard. Fortunately, the problem was discovered before the surrounding materials caught fire or the damage became more serious.
The electrician removed the damaged wiring, repaired the faulty connection, replaced the outlet, and inspected the rest of the circuit for additional signs of overheating. Once the repairs were completed, the unusual glow disappeared. The incident was a reminder that small electrical warning signs can sometimes point to problems hidden behind walls or outlets.
Electrical outlets should not normally produce unexplained light. Unexpected glowing, warmth, discoloration, buzzing, sparking, or a burning smell can all indicate a problem. If you notice something unusual, avoid removing the outlet yourself. Stop using it, turn off the appropriate breaker if it is safe to do so, and have a qualified electrician inspect it. A strange glow may seem minor, but it can be an important warning of an electrical fault.
