What a Purple Beach Flag Really Means—and Why Swimmers Should Pay Attention

When visiting the beach, most people recognize green, yellow, and red flags as warnings about swimming conditions. However, a purple flag carries a different message that beachgoers should not ignore. It generally indicates that potentially dangerous marine life, such as jellyfish, stingrays, or other harmful sea creatures, has been spotted in the area.

Seeing a purple flag does not necessarily mean the beach is closed or that swimming is forbidden. Instead, it serves as an alert that swimmers should be extra cautious. Lifeguards can provide information about recent sightings, explain potential dangers, and recommend whether certain areas of the water should be avoided.

There are several simple ways to reduce the risk of an unpleasant encounter. When walking through shallow water, shuffle your feet along the sandy bottom instead of taking regular steps. This gives stingrays an opportunity to sense your presence and move away. Protective swimwear, including rash guards, may also help reduce skin exposure if jellyfish are present.

Parents should be especially careful when children are playing near the shoreline. Young swimmers may not recognize dangerous marine animals or understand the risks of touching unfamiliar creatures. If someone is stung or injured, they should leave the water and seek advice from a lifeguard or medical professional. Appropriate first aid depends on the type of animal involved.

A purple flag is not meant to scare people away from the beach but to help them make safer decisions. Before entering the water, take a moment to check the warning flags and speak with lifeguards about local conditions. A little awareness can make a big difference in preventing painful encounters and keeping a family beach day enjoyable.
