When you receive a wedding invitation or another formal event invitation, you may notice a small detail on the RSVP card: a line that begins with the letter “M.” If you have ever wondered what it means, the explanation is surprisingly simple. The “M” is the beginning of a courtesy title, such as Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Miss.
Traditionally, guests complete the line by writing their preferred title followed by their full name. For example, a guest might write “Mr. John Smith” or “Ms. Sarah Johnson.” The letter is simply a starting point and is not a question or a special code that guests need to figure out.
This tradition comes from older formal invitation etiquette, when using titles was considered an important part of showing respect and addressing guests properly. Although modern invitations have become more flexible and informal, many couples and wedding planners continue to use this traditional format because it gives RSVP cards a classic, elegant appearance.
Of course, you do not have to use a formal title if you prefer not to. You can simply write your name on the line, especially if you do not use titles such as Mr., Mrs., or Ms. The main purpose is to help the host identify who is responding, rather than require guests to follow a particular form of address.
An RSVP card also helps the host organize the event by confirming attendance, collecting meal preferences, and identifying any dietary requirements. When filling one out, make sure to include the names of everyone attending and provide all the information requested. So, the next time you see that little “M” on an invitation, you will know that it is simply a traditional way of introducing your name.
