Teacher removes U.S. flag from classroom

A California teacher, Kristin Pitzen, faced controversy after joking on TikTok about removing the U.S. flag from her classroom because it made her “uncomfortable.” She encouraged her students to decide whether to stand or say the Pledge of Allegiance, despite the absence of a flag. Pitzen’s actions drew anger from parents, who felt she disrespected the flag and pushed her own social agenda.

Pitzen’s TikTok videos showed her promoting LGBTQ+ pride in her classroom during Pride Month, further fueling the backlash. Community members responded by placing flags on the school lawn to demonstrate patriotism and respect for the flag.

Critics argued that Pitzen’s actions undermined the significance of the flag as a symbol of freedom and failed to acknowledge the sacrifices made by those who defended it. Some suggested she lacked appreciation for the freedoms enjoyed in the United States.

Following the controversy, Pitzen deleted her social media accounts, and she is reportedly no longer teaching. The incident sparked discussions about freedom of expression, respect for national symbols, and the responsibilities of educators regarding inclusivity and diversity in schools. The school district continues to investigate the matter, with potential further actions pending.
