Thrifted Washboard Farmhouse Makeover

Uncovering hidden gems at the local thrift store is one of my favorite pastimes. There’s just something so satisfying about taking an overlooked, forgotten item and breathing new life into it. Recently, I stumbled upon the perfect candidate for a farmhouse-inspired DIY project – a well-loved, vintage washboard.

When I first laid eyes on this washboard, it was clear it had seen better days. The wood was weathered and the metal had a well-worn patina. But I could envision its potential – a charming, one-of-a-kind piece that would fit right into my farmhouse-style decor.

First things first, I gave the washboard a thorough cleaning. Using hot, soapy water and a shish kabob stick, I was able to remove the accumulated lint and grime that had built up over the years. Once it was clean and dry, I applied a coat of Rust-Oleum’s Weathered Wood Accelerator in Gray. This product helped to even out the uneven wood tones and give the washboard a lovely, weathered gray finish.

Next, I turned to one of my go-to resources for farmhouse-inspired decor – Redesign With Prima’s Everyday Farmhouse transfer collection. I selected the “Rosewood Farm” portion of the design and carefully applied it to the center of the washboard. The intricate floral motif and rustic lettering complemented the vintage aesthetic perfectly.

To really bring out the warmth and character of the wood, I turned to Dixie Belle’s Big Mama’s Butta. This all-natural blend of hemp seed oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and carnauba wax is designed to nourish and revive wood surfaces. I applied it to the top board of the washboard, and the difference was immediately noticeable. The wood took on a rich, silky sheen and the scent of the Flannel-scented butta was simply divine.

The final step in my washboard transformation was adding a functional touch. I found a divided metal container at Hobby Lobby and, with the help of my husband, carefully attached it to the middle of the washboard’s base. This created the perfect spot to display a small potted plant, some jute, and vintage clothespins – turning the washboard into a charming, multipurpose decor item that can be displayed on a shelf or hung on the wall.

The process of transforming this thrifted washboard into a stunning farmhouse-inspired piece was incredibly rewarding. By utilizing a few key products and techniques, I was able to breathe new life into an overlooked item and create a unique, one-of-a-kind decor piece that fits perfectly into my rustic, cozy home. I’m thrilled with the end result and can’t wait to find more hidden gems to upcycle in the future.
