Credit \/ Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>On January 29, Andy Beyer was waiting in the parking lot outside the Reagan National Airport, texting his wife, who was on American Airlines 5342 with their daughter Brielle, a 12-year-old cancer survivor who was a competitive figure skater.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But instead of greeting the girls he \u201cloved more than anything,\u201d he watched firetrucks blazing by, not realizing he had just lost his \u201csoulmate\u201d and \u201cprincess\u201d to the deadly midair crash that claimed the lives of 67 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On January 29, Brielle, 12, was traveling with her mom, Justyna, from Kansas to her home in Northern Virginia, where she lived with her dad, Andy and baby brother, 6-year-old Kallen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brielle was part of a select, elite group of the nation\u2019s top young figure skaters, and the mother-daughter duo were returning home after six days of intensive training in Wichita.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSix days was the longest we had ever been apart. It was it was hard. I really missed them. I was really looking forward to give them a hug,\u201d Beyer told\u00a0NBC, adding that his daughter was \u201cjust meant to sparkle.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was a huge accomplishment for the young girl, who as a baby, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a\u00a0cancer\u00a0\u201cthat develops from immature nerve cells found in several areas of the body,\u201d according to the\u00a0Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\u00a0Washington Post\u00a0reports that Brielle went through several surgeries, and spent some time on a ventilator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though Brielle was in recovery, she had some \u201cresidual nerve differences in her legs,\u201d which made skating challenging, yet, nationally, she was still one of the top girls in her age group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/02\/05103623\/AA-flight-664x350.jpg\" alt=\"Debris from American Alines flight 5342. And Justyna was so proud of her, too,\u201d Beyers adds of his wife, 42, who gave up her job in nursing to help their daughter realize her dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-something-was-wrong\">\u2018Something was wrong\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After speaking with Justyna and Brielle every day, Beyers was excited to know the two were heading home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grieving father told the Washington Post that his wife texted him before the American Eagle\u00a0Flight\u00a05342 took off, reveling over the free glass of wine she received from a flight attendant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While he and his son waited eagerly for the plane to land, he texted her, asking if they\u2019d be landing soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But instead of reading a response text from Justyna, he watched emergency officials blazing by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFiretrucks started going by. At that point I knew something was wrong,\u201d the teary-eyed father told\u00a0CNN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-deadly-crash\">Deadly crash<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 9 p.m., the aircraft \u2013 part of the American Airlines group \u2013 collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter while approaching Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All 60 passengers and four crew members on board the commercial flight were killed, along with three soldiers on the helicopter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lived-my-life-for-them\">\u2018Lived my life for them\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day after the horrific crash, the heartbroken father shared an emotional post on Facebook, along with photos that shows the\u00a0family\u00a0enjoying time together.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fandy.beyer.315%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0XrV1QbMmv8HDpoe1aRN2SD6zdJZQFGBUgoMguabBytQ8Z4236CPP4xGKA9vYKjLGl&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"664\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m still in shock, but I lost my soulmate and my princess last night.
