Pope Francis was admitted to hospital for double pneumonia and chronic bronchitis treatment over a week ago<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Vatican has issued a health update following Pope Francis\u2019 admission into hospital for double pneumonia and chronic bronchitis treatment on February 14.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pope Francis<\/a>, 88, has been receiving treatment for his diagnosis\u2019 at Rome\u2019s Gemelli Hospital for more than a week after being admitted due to difficulty breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Saturday evening (22 February), the Vatican had previously shared a statement which said that his condition \u2018continues to be critical\u2019 as the religious<\/a> leader \u2018presented with a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis\u2019, requiring high-flow oxygen (via<\/a> Sky News).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Holy Father\u2019s condition remains critical.\u201d it continued. \u201cThe Pope is not out of danger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was also required to receive blood transfusions after tests revealed thrombocytopenia, which occurs when a person\u2019s platelet count is low and is associated with anaemia, the publication further reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vatican\u2019s statement concluded that the Pope \u2018continues to be vigilant and spent the day in an armchair even though he was suffering more than yesterday\u2019 as \u2018the prognosis is reserved\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now, the Vatican spokesperson, Matteo Bruni, issued a further update on Sunday (February 23) morning, saying: \u201cThe night was tranquil, the Pope rested.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No other information was provided, The Independent\u00a0reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\u00a0the BBC, the Pope has requested openness regarding his\u00a0health, with the Vatican releasing regular statements, which in the past has included his daily activities, such as eating breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One such statement from Friday read: \u201cThe night went well, and this morning Pope Francis got up and had breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While sources close to the Pope\u00a0appear to doubt his recovery, the Vatican insisted on Wednesday (February 19) that he was on the mend, adding (via\u00a0the BBC): \u201cThe blood tests, evaluated by the medical staff, show a slight improvement, particularly in inflammatory indices.\u201d<\/p>\n
