Kathy Hochul, and Attorney General Letitia James, accusing them of violating federal law by shielding illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is a new DOJ,\u201d Bondi announced at a news conference. \u201cNew York has chosen to prioritize&nbsp;illegal aliens&nbsp;over American citizens. It stops. It stops today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mark Schroeder, the New York Department of Motor Vehicles commissioner, has also been charged. Bondi referenced New York\u2019s Green Light laws, known as the Driver\u2019s License Act, which permits illegal immigrants to obtain a driver\u2019s license.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The law prohibits certain federal agencies from accessing driver\u2019s license information in New York State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey have green light laws, meaning they\u2019re giving a green light to any illegal alien in New York, where law enforcement officers cannot check their identity if they pull them over,\u201d Bondi said. \u201cAnd law enforcement officers do not have access to their background. And if these great men and women pull over someone and don\u2019t have access to their background, they have no idea who they\u2019re dealing with, and it puts their lives on the line every single day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t comply with federal law, we will hold you accountable,\u201d Bondi said. \u201cWe did it to Illinois, strike one. Strike two is New York. And if you are a state not complying with federal law, you\u2019re next. Get ready.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, the Justice Department asked a federal judge to strike down sanctuary laws in Chicago and Illinois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hochul responded to the lawsuit late Wednesday night, calling it \u201cworthless\u201d and \u201cdriven by publicity\u201d in a lengthy statement criticizing Bondi\u2019s decision to sue New York and several of its officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHere are the facts: our current laws allow federal immigration officials to access any DMV database with a judicial warrant. That\u2019s a common-sense approach that most New Yorkers support. But there\u2019s no way I\u2019m letting federal agents, or Elon Musk\u2019s shadowy DOGE operation, get unfettered access to the personal data of any New Yorker in the DMV system like 16-year-old kids learning to drive and other vulnerable people,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNew York is proud that immigrants from across the globe come here searching for a better life \u2014 people like my grandparents who left Ireland looking for the American dream. We welcome law-abiding individuals who want to work, pay taxes and contribute to our communities, while at the same time protecting the public safety of all New Yorkers by cracking down on violent criminals,\u201d the governor continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe expect Pam Bondi\u2019s worthless, publicity-driven lawsuit to be a total failure, just like all the others. Let me be clear: New York is not backing down,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New York Attorney General Letitia James also responded to the lawsuit late Wednesday night with the following: \u201cOur state laws, including the Green Light law, protect the rights of all New Yorkers and keep our communities safe. I am prepared to defend our laws, just as I always have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the news conference, Bondi was accompanied by \u201cangel mom\u201d Tammy Nobles from Maryland. Nobles\u2019 20-year-old daughter, Kayla Hamilton, was tragically raped and murdered by an illegal immigrant and MS-13 member in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;Department of Homeland Security \u201cdid not do their jobs,\u201d Nobles said Wednesday, at times choking back tears while sharing her family\u2019s story, Fox News reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey did not check his background,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m so thankful for Pam for having me here today, and I\u2019m so thankful for the opportunities I got from Trump and any other platform \u2014 and for the people (allowing) me to share her story because this is going to end.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"684f6003e199ca137b09540a661b4c2d\" data-index=\"2\" style=\"float: none; margin:0px 0 0px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<!-- Composite Start -->\r\n<div id=\"M940464ScriptRootC1583286\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/jsc.adskeeper.com\/k\/o\/kohajone.press.1583286.js\" async>\r\n<\/script>\r\n<!-- Composite End -->\r\n\n<\/div>\n\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0px; margin: 0; padding: 0; clear: both;\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Newly sworn-in Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Wednesday that the Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against New York state, Gov.
