class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is one of the largest operations we have carried out for the rescue of a person,\u201d Agust\u00edn Morillo Rodr\u00edguez, general commander of the Dominican Republic Navy, told\u00a0CNN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-last-photo\">Last photo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dominican officials initially believed Sudiksha\u2019s disappearance was a drowning. The night she disappeared, sea conditions were dangerous due to high waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the general prosecutor\u2019s office has stated they are now also looking into whether her disappearance might involve something more than just an accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new surveillance image shows missing Pitt student cuddling up to a male friend just before disappearing from a Dominican Republic beach. This is the\u00a0last known\u00a0photo of her, according to Noticias SIN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-passed-out-from-drinking\">Passed out from drinking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the man who was last seen with Sudiksha, Joshua Steven Riibe, he is cooperating with the investigation. Police do not consider him a suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Riibe, from Rock Rapids, Iowa, claims that he was on the beach with Sudiksha when things took a turn. He says he passed out from drinking, and when he woke up, she was gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initially, he also told authorities that he had saved her from a dangerous wave, preventing her from drowning, but after that, his memory goes blank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a transcript obtained by\u00a0NBC News, Riibe said he and Sudiksha were \u201din waist-deep water, talking and kissing a little.\u201d He described how a wave crashed and pulled them both \u201dout to sea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201dI kept trying to get her to breathe, but that made it hard for me to breathe as well, and I swallowed a lot of water,\u201d Riibe explained, adding that he had previously worked as a lifeguard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He claimed that after the wave, he managed to get both himself and Konanki back to shore before she disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201dThe last time I saw her, I asked if she was OK. I didn\u2019t hear her answer,\u201d he said. \u201dI looked around and didn\u2019t see anyone. I thought she\u2019d grabbed her things and left.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-confiscated-ribe-s-passport\">Confiscated Ribe\u2019s passport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dominican authorities confiscated Riibe\u2019s passport on Friday as part of their ongoing investigation, his attorneys confirmed to NBC News. His documents were seized when he attempted to check out of his hotel, as reported by\u00a0Fox News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJoshua Steven Riibe, who has been identified as a \u2018person of interest,\u2019&nbsp;remains in custody&nbsp;and is being interrogated at the National Police\u2019s Gender Violence Unit to gather more information about the incident,\u201d a rep for the&nbsp;Caribbean nation said in an update on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to police sources, Riibe, a student at St. Cloud University in Minnesota, is considered a \u201dkey element\u201d in the ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was also seen on a beach Saturday morning, according to NBC News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking to reporters, he said, \u201cI\u2019m just trying to help them out,\u201d referring to the ongoing search for Sudiksha. He also added, \u201cThe ocean is a dangerous place,\u201d emphasizing the perilous conditions in which she disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-refused-to-answer-eight-questions\">Refused to answer eight questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Riibe is not a suspect, it appears that the Dominican police have been quite tough on him. Riibe reportedly refused to answer eight questions during intense questioning, as reported by Noticias Sin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His parents, Albert and Tina Riibe, have\u00a0criticized\u00a0the Dominican Republic police, defending their son amid the ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They claimed he had been detained under \u201cirregular\u201d conditions and subjected to extensive questioning. The family also alleged that no official translators were present during the early stages of the interrogation, and that official translators weren\u2019t brought in until March 12. Additionally, they said their son had been questioned for long hours without proper assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joshua Riibe, 22, is a senior at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, studying land survey and mapping sciences. He is scheduled for further questioning on Monday, according to Noticias SIN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s a great kid. He wouldn\u2019t hurt a fly,\u201d an aunt, Theresa Riibe,\u00a0told the Daily Mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-sudiksha-s-family-says\">What Sudiksha\u2019s family says<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sudiksha\u2019s family, along with Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman, has called on authorities to explore every possible lead in the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Konanki\u2019s parents, Subbarayudu and Sreedevi Konanki, returned to Virginia last week after traveling to Punta Cana with two family friends, Chapman confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Subbarayudu has formally requested that the investigation be expanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his request, Subbarayudu pointed out that his daughter\u2019s belongings, including her phone and wallet, were left with her friends, which he found unusual since she always carried her phone.
