Here’s What You Should Know

Finding a strange brown insect crawling around your home can be enough to make you stop and wonder if you should be worried. With its large body and unusual, leaf-shaped hind legs, the Western Conifer Seed Bug can certainly look intimidating. However, despite its unusual appearance, this insect is generally harmless to people and pets.

The Western Conifer Seed Bug gets its name from its diet and habitat. It mainly feeds on the seeds of conifer trees such as pine and fir. Unlike insects that bite or feed on humans, it does not suck blood, carry venom, or normally spread disease. It also does not typically damage furniture, clothing, or food stored in your home.

These bugs are most likely to appear indoors when temperatures begin to drop. As colder weather arrives, they look for warm, sheltered places where they can survive the season. Small gaps around windows, doors, screens, vents, and walls can provide an easy entrance, which is why homeowners may suddenly discover one inside.

If you find one, there is usually no need to panic or immediately use insecticide. Instead, you can gently place a cup or container over the insect, slide a piece of paper underneath it, and release it outdoors. Be careful when handling it, because crushing the bug can release an unpleasant odor.

The best way to prevent future visitors is to make your home harder for them to enter. Check for cracks and gaps, repair damaged window screens, replace worn weather stripping, and consider adding mesh to vents. Although the Western Conifer Seed Bug may look alarming, seeing one indoors is generally more of a nuisance than a danger.

Finding a strange brown insect crawling around your home can be enough to make you stop and wonder if you should be worried.
