While you rest, your body repairs tissues, restores energy, supports the immune system, balances important processes, and helps the brain process memories. But beyond how long you sleep, the position you choose can also influence breathing, digestion, circulation, and overall comfort.

For people who experience acid reflux or frequent heartburn, sleeping on the left side may be worth trying. Research suggests that left-side sleeping can help keep stomach contents positioned away from the esophagus, while right-side sleeping may make nighttime reflux worse for some people. Avoiding large meals before bed and elevating the head of the bed may also help manage symptoms.

Your sleeping position can affect breathing, too. Sleeping on your back may allow the tongue and soft tissues to narrow the airway, potentially increasing snoring or worsening sleep apnea. Side sleeping, whether on the left or right, generally helps keep the airway more open. During pregnancy, side sleeping is commonly recommended, with the left side often preferred for circulation and comfort.

However, side sleeping isn’t perfect for everyone. Staying in one position for hours can put pressure on the shoulder, hip, neck, or arm. A supportive pillow, a pillow between the knees, and a comfortable mattress can help maintain better alignment and reduce pressure points throughout the night.

Ultimately, there is no single sleeping position that works best for everyone. If you sleep comfortably, wake refreshed, and have no persistent symptoms, there may be no reason to change your routine. But frequent heartburn, loud snoring, nighttime breathing problems, persistent pain, numbness, or excessive daytime tiredness are worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

Sleep does much more than simply give you a break at the end of the day.
