The problem is that the boyfriend does not work and apparently has no intention of getting a job. Even more surprising, the daughter wants her father to let him live there completely rent- and bill-free. When he refuses, she gives him an ultimatum: if her boyfriend cannot move in, she will leave the house with him.

The father’s hesitation is understandable. Bringing another adult into the household means additional expenses, responsibilities, and potential conflict. Providing free housing, food, electricity, and other necessities to someone who refuses to contribute could quickly become a long-term arrangement. What starts as a temporary favor can sometimes become an expectation, making it much harder to establish boundaries later.

Rather than giving in to the ultimatum, the father can calmly explain his position. His home is his responsibility, and he has every right to establish reasonable rules for the adults who live there. If the boyfriend wants to move in, there could be expectations involving rent, groceries, household chores, or a genuine plan to find employment and become independent. The goal does not have to be punishment—it can simply be shared responsibility.

If the daughter chooses to move out because her boyfriend is not welcome under those conditions, that is ultimately her decision. The father can continue to love and support his daughter without agreeing to provide unlimited resources to another adult. Sometimes experiencing the real costs of rent, utilities, food, and everyday living can help people understand the value of what they previously received.

In the end, the father should focus on boundaries rather than pressure. He does not have to reward an ultimatum, nor does he need to turn the situation into a family war. He can make his expectations clear and allow his daughter and her boyfriend to decide what they want to do. And if they eventually move out, that extra bedroom might just become the perfect gaming room, office, or home theater.

A father is facing an uncomfortable situation after his daughter, who lives with him in his five-bedroom home, asked if her boyfriend could move in.
