Rather than asking for temporary help during an emergency, the young man was making a major purchase part of the conditions for staying at home.

The situation raises an uncomfortable question: should parents give in when they can afford to help, or could doing so encourage entitlement? Some might argue that helping an adult child purchase a vehicle is an act of generosity. Others believe that agreeing after an ultimatum could send the message that pressure and threats are effective ways to get what you want.

A parent can love their child deeply while still saying no. Instead of buying an expensive new car, they could offer practical support, such as helping create a budget, researching affordable transportation, saving for a used vehicle, or finding ways to increase income. These forms of assistance can teach responsibility without taking away the young adult’s opportunity to solve the problem himself.

If the son ultimately decides to move in with his father, accepting that decision may also be part of setting a healthy boundary. A parent doesn’t necessarily have to chase after him or immediately change their mind simply because they fear losing him. Allowing an adult child to make choices—and experience the consequences—can sometimes be more valuable than providing everything they demand.

So what would you do in this situation? Would you buy the car to keep your son at home, or would you calmly say, “I love you, but I’m not buying you a new car”? Setting a boundary doesn’t mean closing the door on your child. Sometimes, it means making it clear that love and financial demands are two very different things.

“Buy me a new car, or I’m moving in with Dad.” For one parent, the demand from their 21-year-old son turned a family disagreement into a difficult…

[1

post-14145","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
