It often develops when bacteria enter the tooth through untreated cavities, cracks, or damaged dental work. Gum disease can also lead to an abscess around the tooth’s root. Although the symptoms may begin with a simple toothache, the infection can become serious if left untreated, making early dental care essential.

One of the most common warning signs is persistent, throbbing tooth pain that may spread to the jaw, ear, or neck. Other symptoms include swollen or red gums, sensitivity to hot and cold foods, pain when chewing, a bad taste in the mouth, and unpleasant breath. Some people develop facial swelling, swollen lymph nodes, or fever. Occasionally, an abscess drains on its own, causing the pain to decrease temporarily. However, this does not mean the infection has disappeared.

A dental abscess will not reliably heal without professional treatment. A dentist may need to drain the pus, perform a root canal to save the tooth, or remove the tooth if it cannot be repaired. Antibiotics may be prescribed when the infection is spreading or causing systemic symptoms, but they do not replace treatment of the underlying dental problem. Seeking care promptly can help prevent complications and improve the chances of saving the affected tooth.

While waiting to see a dentist, you can rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water and use an over-the-counter pain reliever according to its instructions, if it is safe for you. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth or gums, as it can damage the tissue. Do not attempt to puncture or squeeze the abscess yourself. Contact a dentist as soon as possible, even if the pain suddenly improves.

WATCH VIDEO:

A dental abscess can become a medical emergency. Seek emergency medical care immediately if you experience difficulty breathing or swallowing, significant swelling of the face or neck, or swelling that affects the area around your eye. Fever accompanied by worsening swelling or feeling seriously unwell also requires urgent assessment. Good oral hygiene, regular dental checkups, and prompt treatment of cavities can reduce the risk of developing an abscess. Never ignore persistent tooth pain—early treatment can protect both your smile and your health.

A dental abscess is a painful infection that causes a pocket of pus to form in or around a tooth.
