I bumped into a veteran at Walmart earlier. I knew he was a veteran because he had veteran plates, stickers, decals, and window clings. Plus he was wearing a veteran hat and vest. And when the guy asked him to see his receipt on the way out his answer was “I’m a veteran.” It was an honor just being near him.
\nI asked him on the way back to his backed-in truck that took three spaces where and when he served, and he was having a hard time remembering, but he knows it was in the 1970s because they gave him one of those neat “Vietnam Era Vet” patches that mean you were enlisted during the war but didn’t quite make it to combat. He was probably really bummed but said “The experience I got changing Jeep oil and checking tire pressure gave me the skills I needed to work at the fanciest gas station in Elkhart, Indiana. Until Obama made full-service illegal that is.”
\nAnyway, he bummed a smoke and told me Obama is also to blame for his Type 2. “I pay full price for my insulin,” he said in his proudest American voice, “It’s the gas to get to the pharmacy that’s gonna ruin me.”
