Time and again, horrific stories come out where a diagnosis is delayed by months because young women were not taken seriously with their concerns.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keep reading to learn more about what happened in this horrible instance\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>23-year-old Chandler Plante has been grappling with a litany of health issues since 2021. But it was not always like this for her. But before all of her health problems began in 2021, Plante described herself as a \u201cnormal 21-year-old\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She contracted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/covid\/\">COVID-19<\/a>&nbsp;in December 2020&nbsp;but recovered within a week since her case was mild. It was three months after her recovery that she began to notice numbness in her hands and forearms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She went to the emergency room but was told her symptoms most likely had to do with \u201canxiety.\u201d She&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/real-life\/woman-23-who-suffered-stroke-27098906\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recalls<\/a>, \u201cI was told to move along, so I left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/09\/18135844\/hiospital82.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-136806\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But then her health issues persisted, she said, \u201cBut it kept happening \u2013 and on June 28, a brain scan showed the symptoms I thought were panic attacks were actually big ischemic strokes. I had so much inflammation in my head that it was cutting off the oxygen to my arteries \u2013 while they\u2019re supposed to measure at 4mm, mine were as narrow as 0.5mm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"962\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/kohajone.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/366148469_136977016120050_3227504614131221670_n-962x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4567\" style=\"width:467px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kohajone.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/366148469_136977016120050_3227504614131221670_n-962x1024.jpg 962w, https:\/\/kohajone.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/366148469_136977016120050_3227504614131221670_n-282x300.jpg 282w, https:\/\/kohajone.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/366148469_136977016120050_3227504614131221670_n-768x818.jpg 768w, https:\/\/kohajone.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/366148469_136977016120050_3227504614131221670_n.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 962px) 100vw, 962px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But in November 2021, her stents began migrating to behind her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/eye\/\">right eye<\/a>\u00a0and started to \u2018choke out\u2019 her optic nerve. This led to her going permanently blind in one eye<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said, \u201cDoctors were stumped, they had no idea what could\u2019ve caused it. They questioned whether it could be a brain&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/tumor\/\">tumor<\/a>, but all my scans showed up clear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just really bizarre,\u201d the young woman&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/real-life\/woman-23-who-suffered-stroke-27098906\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recalled<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She underwent a myriad of tests as doctors tried to figure out what could have gone wrong. She had a craniotomy keyhole surgery on her brain on December 6, 2021. Later the same month, she was referred for a lumbar puncture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/09\/18135847\/hospitalicu292.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-136807\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The same month, tissue leftover from her craniotomy was sent for biopsy to check for a severe form of long covid as well as the signs of brain tumor. In March 2022, she was prescribed an immunosuppressant called methotrexate. Then in November, 2021, she started a 10-day course of radiation therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every procedure and medical treatment left Plante feeling worse. She said,&nbsp;\u201cEach treatment made me feel horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was experiencing horrific headaches and inflammation of my facial nerves thanks to my anti-seizure medication. It was excruciatingly painful,\u201d the 23-year-old said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/kohajone.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/426303242_419731837159595_8707594523708802901_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4568\" style=\"width:395px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this kept happening till April 2023, when she had a breakthrough in her case. She had her first infusion of a chemodrug called rituximab. It brought \u201csome semblance of a normal life,\u201d and some of her side effects even began to improve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said, \u201cFor the first time, I genuinely feel like my treatment is helping me. This is the least amount of side effects I\u2019ve ever had, which is fabulous. I\u2019m on a combination of rituximab and methotrexate \u2013 another chemotherapy drug. I experience some hair loss and thinning, but I balance this out with folic acid. It\u2019s pretty normal for me at this point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She now makes videos to inspire others with her positivity. She&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/real-life\/woman-23-who-suffered-stroke-27098906\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;about her&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@chanplante?fbclid=IwAR3PtnM9Z3f56VVFanb9vHBLfbknT80jPMNH-XeLzQdOKUiPGnvwmNLKKHE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TikTok account<\/a>, \u201cMy page is about healing and positivity \u2013 and dealing with an absurd situation. Many people believe positive humans are just born this way \u2013 but I think it\u2019s something I\u2019ve had to practice. I was tired of suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/09\/18140544\/shutterstock_1921349711.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-136810\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome days, those jokes I was making with my Starbucks baristas and nurses were the highlight of my day \u2013 because everything else was so horrible. It was a defense mechanism \u2013 I needed that positivity to lift me out of a really dark time. It helped me to heal in the most authentic way possible,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve made so many friends within the disabled community \u2013 I was so impressed by the kindness and humanity of the people around me while I was going through something that genuinely made me question whether I wanted to be here.
