{"id":4909,"date":"2024-06-04T12:43:20","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T12:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kohajone.press\/?p=4909"},"modified":"2024-06-04T12:43:21","modified_gmt":"2024-06-04T12:43:21","slug":"legendary-quartet-of-brothers-wrote-a-heartbreaking-song-that-had-people-in-tears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kohajone.press\/?p=4909","title":{"rendered":"Legendary quartet of \u2018brothers\u2019 wrote a heartbreaking song that had people in tears"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/1960s\/\">1963<\/a>, when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/johnny-cash\/\">Johnny Cash<\/a>&nbsp;was burning up the charts with his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/country-music\/\">song<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cRing of Fire,\u201d he met four young men on stage at the Roanoke Fair in Virginia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>After impressing Cash with their vocals, the men \u2013 known as the Statler Brothers \u2013 were hired \u201con a handshake,\u201d and toured with the \u201cMan in Black\u201d for almost 10 years, inspiring their song \u201cWe Got Paid by Cash.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Keep reading to learn more about the legendary quartet who made America cry with their song, \u201cMore than a Name on the Wall.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1963, when The Kingsmen hit the top of the charts with a song titled \u201cLouie Louie,\u201d the other Kingsmen, from Virginia, had to change the name of their quartet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The four boys, Don and Harold Reid, Phil Balsley and Lew DeWitt, were on tour, in a hotel room pitching out some new names, to separate their band from the Oregon-based quintet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don earlier shared with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/virginialiving.com\/feature\/don-reid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Virgina<\/a>&nbsp;publication that it was his eyes that struck a box of Statler brand tissues in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The name stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe could have been the Kleenex Brothers,\u201d Don said of the new era of two brothers and two friends, now known as the Statler Brothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That same year, the Statler Brothers, whose country sounds blend with gospel harmonies, were playing at the Roanoke Fair in Salem, Virginia, when they captured the attention of the iconic Johhny Cash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"692\" src=\"https:\/\/kohajone.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4910\" style=\"width:456px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kohajone.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-6.png 640w, https:\/\/kohajone.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/image-6-277x300.png 277w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cash was at the Salem Fairgrounds promoting his 16<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;album and hired them \u201con a handshake.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJohn was a walkin\u2019, talkin\u2019, singin\u2019 musical encyclopedia,\u201d Reid said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next 10 years, the \u201cClass of \u201857\u201d singers toured, recorded and appeared on TV with Cash, who helped the young men become Columbia Records hitmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1965, their genre-bending song \u201cFlowers on the Wall\u201d was a top hit in country and pop music. Beating out the Beatles\u2019 \u201cHelp!\u201d and the Supremes\u2019 \u201cStop in the Name of Love,\u201d the Statler Brothers earned their first two Grammy Awards: Best New Country and Western Artist and Best Contemporary Performance (Group).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The song\u2019s popularity again exploded in 1994, with the release of Quentin Tarantino\u2019s hit film&nbsp;<em>Pulp Fiction<\/em>. In one scene, \u201cFlowers on the Wall\u201d is piping from the car radio as Butch (played by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/bruce-willis\/\">Bruce Willis<\/a>) runs down&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/celebrity\/samuel-l-jackson-has-been-with-college-sweetheart-for-43-years-inside-their-love-story\/\">Samuel L. Jackson\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qBp4PhcUGUY?si=8QKeIVebwetEbIH8\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p>The song is included on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, that sold more than one million copies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVery few people have Bruce Willis help them,\u201d Harold told the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsleader.com\/story\/news\/local\/2020\/04\/24\/harold-reid-founding-member-statler-brothers-dies-80\/3013597001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">News Leader<\/a>&nbsp;in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cashing-in\">Cashing in<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Very few people also had Cash helping them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing with him for those years was our education in the music business. We learned what to do, what not to do, and we left on the best of terms.\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/virginialiving.com\/feature\/don-reid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reid said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over their 12-year run, the \u201cDo You Know You are My Sunshine?\u201d singers released more than 40 albums, and earned several accolades that include being named, nine times, as the Country Music Association\u2019s Vocal Group of the Year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From 1991 to 1988, the group had their own variety show on The Nashville Network (TNN). In 1992, the weekly show \u2013 featuring the comedic talents of Harold, the founding member \u2013 was the most popular on TNN and ranked the highest in the network\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one episode, an emotionally-charged song, \u201cMore Than a Name on the Wall\u201d was played to audiences, a performance that brought tears to the eyes of viewers across America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Written by Jimmy Fortune, who replaced DeWitt after he left due to medical reasons and then died in 1990, the song tells the story of the black polished Vietnam Memorial wall, that\u2019s etched with the names of 58,381 fallen soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.strictly-country.com\/JimmyFortune-morethananameonawall.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Strictly Country<\/a>, Fortune explains his inspiration for the heartbreaking song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PdOEbqa4SA0?si=s2deja0iQBZseVn1\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou look at it. You look at each one of those lines from a distance, you look at it and see those lines stacked on top of each other, and they seem like they go on forever, and forever, and forever,\u201d he said of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. \u201cI realized that was a mother\u2019s child. That was someone\u2019s husband. Just all the stories and all the memories of that child\u2026It just hit me that they are more than a name on a wall.\u201d<br>Fortune, who wrote and sang lead on the 1984 hit song \u201cElizabeth\u201d added, \u201cIt was just such a profound statement. I made a mental note.
