Sometimes animals are adopted and accepted by a different species as if they are their own kind.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>That was the remarkable case recently, when a donkey long thought to be dead was found with a very surprising new family\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Triathlete and outdoorsman Max Fennell was out on a hunting trip in March, and noticed something unexpected among a herd of elk: a donkey!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-djur.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/06\/18200608\/Screenshot-2024-06-18-at-4.05.09-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33417\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Screenshot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fennell couldn\u2019t believe what he was seeing, calling it \u201cone of my wildest hunting trips to date.\u201d The donkey moves and reacts with the herd as if he is just one of the elk, completely accepted as one of them. It was like something out of a children\u2019s book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t get over seeing it and I\u2019m amazed that the donkey looks happy and healthy!\u201d Fennell wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As if that unusual sight wasn\u2019t enough, Fennell soon learned the donkey\u2019s unbelievable story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One commenter informed him that the donkey was \u201cactually a legend\u201d who had been \u201crunning with the elk for years now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, the donkey\u2019s former owner commented and revealed that he ended up with the elk after going missing five years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was heartbreaking at the time,\u201d David Drewry wrote. \u201cGlad to see he is helping the heard grow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-djur.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/06\/18200351\/Screenshot-2024-06-18-at-4.01.24-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33415\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Screenshot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dave and his wife Terrie live on a ranch near Auburn, California. They told&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/sacramento\/news\/owners-of-donkey-lost-5-years-ago-near-auburn-discover-where-hes-been\/\">CBS Sacramento<\/a>&nbsp;that the donkey, named Diesel, went missing in 2019 while on a hiking trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They believe a mountain lion likely scared him off, and after years passed with no sign of the donkey they believed he was gone for good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they were surprised to learn that Diesel wasn\u2019t dead, he had just found a new family \u2014 and a new life as a wild elk. The former owners were happy to see their old friend alive and thriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was amazing. It was like, oh my gosh. Finally, we saw him. Finally, we know he\u2019s good. He\u2019s living his best life. He\u2019s happy. He\u2019s healthy, and it was just a relief,\u201d Terrie told CBS Sacramento.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTwo completely different creatures, but they learn to get along and be each other\u2019s family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vISyn4kkLPk?si=U8AbI0aBUczwtnqw\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Not only did the elk seemingly accept him as one of their own, but Diesel has apparently been protecting the herd from predators like coyotes and mountain lions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, the 8-year-old donkey has spent most of his life among the elk, and it would be \u201cnext to impossible\u201d to try to bring the \u201cwild burro\u201d home, the owners say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They accepted that it\u2019s best to let him be in the wild \u2014 after all, it seems Diesel has finally found his calling. \u201cHe\u2019s out there doing what he\u2019s raised to do,\u201d Terrie said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-djur.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2024\/06\/18200600\/Screenshot-2024-06-18-at-4.05.27-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33416\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Screenshot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What a story!
