{"id":7356,"date":"2024-08-04T13:37:24","date_gmt":"2024-08-04T13:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kohajone.press\/?p=7356"},"modified":"2024-08-04T13:37:26","modified_gmt":"2024-08-04T13:37:26","slug":"coach-pays-tribute-to-kaepernick-during-anthem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kohajone.press\/?p=7356","title":{"rendered":"Coach Pays Tribute To Kaepernick During Anthem"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the lead of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall, a few members of a New Jersey high school football team knelt while the national anthem played.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Kaepernick and Marshall, coaches and students combined as the predominantly non-white Woodrow Wilson school performed the controversial move to raise awareness of social and economic injustice, NBC News reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initially, Tigers coach Preston Brown said he was going to kneel alone in protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am well aware of the third verse of the national anthem which is not usually sung, and I know that the words of the song were not originally meant to include people like me,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silent third verse he\u2019s referring to reads: \u201cNo refuge could save the hireling and slave \/ From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[Because] of recent events that happened the last couple years, things I experienced in college being an African-American student athlete in the south, I felt it was an appropriate time to do that,\u201d explained Brown, NJ.com reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.opposingviews.com\/.image\/t_share\/MTg5MzM0ODgxOTc5ODY5MTUy\/coach2.webp\" alt=\"Photo credit: NBC, \u200bUSA Today\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a>Photo credit:&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/local\/Camden-Football-Team-Coaches-Kneel-During-National-Anthem-District-Supports-Expression-393009511.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBC<\/a><a>, \u200b<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/nfl\/broncos\/2016\/09\/12\/brandon-marshall-centurylink-sponsor-national-anthem-kneeling\/90277042\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USA Today<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m African-American, I wouldn\u2019t rather be in any other country,\u201d he added. \u201cBut I can\u2019t be oblivious to the things I see every day that are different four blocks away in a neighboring town.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After informing players of his decision, some of the students decided to join Brown, likely because the students could empathize with his reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI grew up in poverty, a lot of these kids are growing up in poverty,\u201d explained Brown. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of social injustices and economic disparities.
