{"id":7412,"date":"2024-08-06T12:25:36","date_gmt":"2024-08-06T12:25:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kohajone.press\/?p=7412"},"modified":"2024-08-06T12:25:38","modified_gmt":"2024-08-06T12:25:38","slug":"athletes-forced-to-withdraw-from-events-as-multiple-fall-ill-after-swimming-in-the-river-seine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kohajone.press\/?p=7412","title":{"rendered":"Athletes forced to withdraw from events as multiple fall ill after swimming in the River Seine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Organizers at Paris 2024 have previously delayed events due to the water quality of the Seine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>At least two Olympic athletes have been forced to withdraw from events at Paris 2024 after swimming in the River Seine.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have been concerns about the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/news\/world-news\/jolien-vermeylen-triathlon-swam-river-seine-water-quality-579679-20240802\">water quality<\/a>&nbsp;of the river running through the centre of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/france\">Paris<\/a>&nbsp;ever since the Games kicked off last month \u2013 so much so that organizers delayed triathlon events due to contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Races have since taken place in the water, but now two of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/sport\">athletes<\/a>&nbsp;who swam in the Seine have had to withdraw from events due to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/health\">illness<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.ladbible.com\/resize?type=webp&amp;quality=70&amp;width=3840&amp;fit=contain&amp;gravity=auto&amp;url=https:\/\/images.ladbiblegroup.com\/v3\/assets\/blt949ea8e16e463049\/blt2d02545f233ed85d\/66b0c051ef60fc44cc19e93d\/river-olympics.jpg\" alt=\"The swimming section of the mixed relay took place in the Seine. (Al Bello\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Belgium\u2019s Claire Michel finished 38th in the women\u2019s triathlon last week, but she since\u00a0became too ill\u00a0to take part in the mixed triathlon which took place today (August 5).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a result, Belgium was forced to withdraw its entire team from the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, the country said it hopes \u2018that lessons will be learned for future triathlon competitions at the Olympic Games\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are thinking here of the guarantee of training days, competition days and the competition format, which must be clarified in advance and ensure that there is no uncertainty for the athletes, entourage and supporters,\u201d they added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Swiss triathlete Adrien Briffod has been struggling with a stomach infection and consequently also had to withdraw from the team relay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither country have confirmed whether the illness are linked to the river, however, reports in Belgium have suggested Michel was infected with E. coli \u2013 a bacteria which can make you ill with diarrhea, vomiting and a fever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Belgian&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/olympics\">Olympic<\/a>&nbsp;and Interfederal Committee has not elaborated on Michel\u2019s illness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.ladbible.com\/resize?type=webp&amp;quality=70&amp;width=3840&amp;fit=contain&amp;gravity=auto&amp;url=https:\/\/images.ladbiblegroup.com\/v3\/assets\/blt949ea8e16e463049\/blt54f6a977bdc8ffe8\/66b0c0a70edfb768cf117c88\/triathlon-seine.jpg\" alt=\"Both Michel and Briffod previously swam in the Seine.
