One and a half million tourists visit a landmark that is more radioactive than legally allowed at a power plant every year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s probably not the first thing you\u2019d think of unless you were walking somewhere like\u00a0Chernobyl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although there\u2019s luckily\u00a0no \u2018claw of death\u2019\u00a0that could kill you with a single touch \u2013 unlike Chernobyl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But no, it\u2019s not in Europe but rather it\u2019s in the good ole\u2019\u00a0US\u00a0of A.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if you are from\u00a0New York\u00a0City, then it\u2019s probably not news to you \u2013 as it\u2019s Grand Central Terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\u00a0Forbes, one and a half million tourists visited the station in 2023 \u2013 excluding train and subway passengers \u2013 while more than 750,000 pass through it every single day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s also the second most-visited tourist attraction in New York outside of Times Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So how could something so accessible to the public give off such a high rating on the geiger meter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is thanks, or without thanks actually, to its large mass of granite and brick that is used throughout it \u2013 a jaw dropping feature that has helped keep it a tourist attraction for the last 111 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, believe it or not, the beautiful architecture that is on display was designed and built between 1903 and 1913.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to all that granite, it has become more radioactive than what is permitted in nuclear power plants because the rock emits radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\u00a0Department of Energy, certain parts of the station average of 525 mrem per year \u2013 which the measure used to estimate potential health effects of low levels of ionizing radiation on the human body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if you were just visiting, or even if you worked there, it wouldn\u2019t actually be dangerous at all \u2013 you wouldn\u2019t mutate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While radiation sounds manmade \u2013 simply because we jump to the assumption of\u00a0nuclear bombs\u00a0\u2013 it actually comes from natural materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the reason it is so widely used and visited from people in every inch of the world \u2013 like x-rays and radiotherapy for example \u2013 so we are exposed to radiation everywhere we go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As per\u00a0ABC News, nuclear researcher Eric Hall also says the doses at Grand Central are \u2018very, very small\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The base of the exterior is made out of a flashy Stony Creek granite, while Indiana limestone, from Bedford, Indiana, makes up the upper portion of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So next time you visit the big\u00a0Apple, be sure to stop by Central Terminal.<\/p>\n
