The Team USA gymnast received the bronze medal after her coach challenged her score<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gymnast Jordan Chiles has been ordered to return her Olympic bronze medal following a failed appeal.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Team\u00a0USA\u00a0star was awarded the medal following her floor exercise routine in Paris, which initially earned her a score of 13.666 and landed her in fifth place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, after USA\u00a0Gymnastics\u00a0Coach Cecile Landi raised an inquiry over Chiles\u2019 difficulty score, Chiles received another 0.1 of a point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was only a small change, but it was enough to push her past Romania\u2019s Ana B\u01cerbosu and USA\u2019s Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who were tied, into third place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B\u01cerbosu therefore lost the medal and Chiles was awarded it, but her success was\u00a0thrown into contention\u00a0when Romania challenged the score, arguing the USA Gymnastics inquiry came after the one-minute deadline coaches have to raise an inquiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld Team Romania\u2019s challenge, Chiles and USA Gymnastics were left trying to appeal the decision in a final bid to\u00a0hold on to her medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CAS initially said it had determined the inquiry about Chiles\u2019 score \u2018was raised after the conclusion of the one-minute deadline\u2026 and is determined to be without effect\u2019, though the US argued it had\u00a0video evidence\u00a0to prove otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately for Chiles, US\u00a0Olympic\u00a0officials announced on Monday (August 12) that CAS had declined to reconsider its decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, USA Gymnastics said: \u201cUSA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure the just scoring, placement, and medal award for Jordan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Romania initially suggested B\u01cerbosu, Maneca-Voinea, and Chiles should all be placed in third position and each be given a medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the International Olympic Committee has ordered Chiles to return the bronze medal so it can be reallocated to B\u01cerbosu, who has been promoted into third place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chiles announced a decision to take a step out of the spotlight in the wake of the controversy, saying she is \u2018taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simone Biles, who won silver in the competition, showed support for her teammate on Instagram, writing: \u201cSending you so much love Jordan. Keep your chin up \u2018Olympic champ\u2019 we love you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

B\u0103rbosu has also spoken out,\u00a0penning a heartfelt message to Chiles on Instagram, saying: \u201cI know what you are feeling, because I\u2019ve been through the same. But I know you\u2019ll come back stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hope from deep of my heart that at the next Olympics, all three of us will share same podium. This is my true dream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade took gold in the event.<\/p>\n
