At the grand age of 117, Spain\u2019s Maria Branyas Morera has died<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The world\u2019s oldest person has died at the grand old age of 117.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maria Branyas, an\u00a0American-born\u00a0Spaniard believed to be the world\u2019s oldest person at 117, has died, her family said on Tuesday (August 20).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a post on Ms Branyas\u2019s account on\u00a0Twitter, her family wrote in Catalan: \u201cMaria Branyas has left us. She has gone the way she wanted: in her sleep, at peace, and without pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will always remember her for her advice and her kindness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gerontology Research Group, which validates details of people thought to be 110 or older, listed Ms Branyas as the oldest known person in the world after the death of French nun Lucile Randon last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Branyas was born in San Francisco on March 4, 1907, before her family returned to Spain when she was young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time of her death she was living in the Resid\u00e8ncia Santa Mar\u00eda del Tura nursing home in the Catalan town of Olot \u2013 where she had called home since 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms Branyas took the title on January 17 when Randon, who was known as Sister Andre, died at the age of 118 years and 340 days \u2013 with the\u00a0Guinness Book of World Records\u00a0acknowledging her title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking to\u00a0a local media outlet Catalan News in 2019, she explained that she moved from San Francisco to Catalonia,\u00a0Spain, in 1914 by boat \u2013 during the first World War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said: \u201cWe came here on a boat. Because of the war,\u00a0Germany\u00a0was still attacking the North, and you couldn\u2019t go through the Nordic seas, but we could go further down through the Azores and Cuba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn 1914 I was already a bit aware [of what was happening].<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recalling both World Wars, she said: \u201cThey were very harmful in Europe, but they also brought some advances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also gave insight into the Spanish Civil War that took place between 1936 and 1939, adding: \u201cI have very bad memories of it, some people rose up and started to commit atrocities when no one was talking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Branyas was born the same year that the first car was registered in Barcelona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her Twitter account is called \u2018Super Catalan Grandma\u2019 and bears the description: \u201cI am old, very old, but not an idiot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next oldest person listed by the Gerontology Research Group is Tomiko Itooka, from\u00a0Japan, who is 116 \u2013 and is now the oldest person in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the oldest human to ever live \u2013 who has been fully authenticated \u2013 was Jeanne Louise Calment of\u00a0France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She died at the age of 122 years and 164 days back in 1997 on August 4.<\/p>\n
