In job interviews, the\u00a0tech\u00a0billionaire asks each candidate a specific question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After hearing what it is, it might sound like a standard question when you\u2019re tested for a potential job, but it\u2019s pretty impressive what it can reveal about someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As such, Musk\u2019s rationale for this question is simple: it weeds out the liars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0SpaceX\u00a0founder uses this technique to see whether the interviewee truly solved the problem they claimed to have solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is: \u2018Tell me about some of the most difficult problems you worked on and how you solved them.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s because people who have actually solved complex problems can explain their approach step-by-step in great detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Usually, someone who really had to struggle with a problem, they really understand [the details], and they don\u2019t forget,\u2019 Musk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whereas those who are completely making up their experience struggle to provide specifics about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And before you think it\u2019s just another method from the\u00a0Tesla\u00a0CEO: science has backed it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 2020 study published in the Journal of Applied Research in Memory and Cognition analysed job-interview techniques and found that Musk\u2019s is known as \u2018Asymmetric Information Management\u2019 or AIM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach asks candidates for detailed accounts of situations. More information helps interviewers distinguish between truth and lies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if you are going to try this out yourself, don\u2019t be shy about the details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Small details are the lifeblood of forensic\u00a0investigations\u00a0and can provide investigators with facts to check and witnesses to question,\u2019 Cody Porter, one of the study\u2019s authors and a Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Portsmouth, pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018In contrast, liars wish to conceal their guilt. This means they are more likely to strategically withhold information in response to the AIM method. Their assumption here is that providing more information will make it easier for the investigator to detect their lie, so instead, they provide less information.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study found that using this technique can improve an interviewer\u2019s ability to detect liars by 70%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many employers value accountability. So, using this method is a great way to find this trustworthy quality in candidates early on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After all, no one wants to hire someone who talks big but delivers nothing.<\/p>\n
