Tim Walz\u2019s debate performance against Sen. JD Vance following the CBS-moderated event Tuesday evening, giving Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019 running mate low marks across the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CNN\u2019s Abby Phillips, Dana Bash, and Jake Tapper, notably, were all critical of Walz, with each of them alternately opining that he appeared to either lack debate prep or had far too much of it and was not quick enough on his feet to counter Vance\u2019s many jabs at Harris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At one point during post-debate analysis, Tapper even claimed that Vance is a \u201cmuch more experienced\u201d debater, a point that Bash said could be attributed to the fact that Walz \u2014 and Harris \u2014 have not done many media interviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think there was a clear lack of preparation and execution here,\u201d anchor Abby Phillip said, noting how Vance managed to land some \u201cpunches.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bash had the opposite take. \u201cI think he had too much preparation. He had so many lines that he was clearly trying to say,\u201d she said. \u201cI think the lack of interviews that he has done with national media, with local media \u2014 it showed he needed more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tapper added that \u201cJD Vance is much more experienced with this, at public speaking and defending himself and pivoting,\u201d while host Anderson Cooper concluded that Walz seemed nervous on stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: CNN admits JD Vance was the &quot;much more experienced&quot; debater. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/p8bMCo8is7\">pic.twitter.com\/p8bMCo8is7<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Leading Report (@LeadingReport) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeadingReport\/status\/1841322286336340196?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 2, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt kind of reminded me of the June 27 debate, when Kamala Harris that night said of Joe Biden, \u2018It was a slow start, but a strong finish,\u2019\u201d ABC News anchor Linsey Davis said regarding Walz\u2019s debate against former President Donald Trump\u2019s running mate. \u201cAnd that\u2019s how I felt Tim Walz kind of did tonight,\u201d she added, per the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/01\/us-news\/cnn-political-anchors-pan-tim-walzs-vp-debate-performance-clear-lack-of-preparation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Davis, who co-moderated the presidential debate on September 10 between Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump alongside David Muir, suggested that Vance was more \u201ceffective\u201d at challenging Harris on Tuesday than Trump had been the previous month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel like that was really effective,\u201d Davis said of Vance, who noted frequently during the debate that Harris has not pressed for any of the issues and policies she claims to support now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou know, to use Tim Walz, his own words, I mean, a lot about this debate tonight was, was weird,\u201d she added.&nbsp;\u201cThere were comfortable, cringey moments, but overall, my take on this was that JD Vance needed to come away as that humble, likable guy from \u2018Hillbilly Elegy.\u2019 It seemed like he did perhaps get some points in that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vance planned to hold Harris\u2019 running mate \u201caccountable,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/conservativebrief.com\/vance-vp-86062\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a>&nbsp;a Minnesota Republican lawmaker who has played Walz during Vance\u2019s debate prep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>House Majority Whip&nbsp;Tom Emmer said during an interview on Sunday he believes that Vance holds an advantage over Walz on the issues that have consistently polled as the most important to voters this election cycle. CBS News will host the debate, moderated by \u201cCBS Evening News\u201d anchor Norah O\u2019Donnell and Margaret Brennan of \u201cFace the Nation,\u201d The Hill&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4906299-tom-emmer-jd-vance-hold-tim-walz-accountable-vp-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s going to do a great job,\u201d Emmer told ABC News\u2019 Martha Raddatz regarding Vance. \u201cI can tell you, he\u2019s got the issues on his side, Martha. He could talk about the economy that Donald Trump fixed and that Harris and Biden broke. He can talk about the border that Trump fixed and they broke. He can talk about peace and stability around the world, which they don\u2019t even have a clue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnce he understands that Tim Walz is just going to try and deflect and go into this folksy whatever, he\u2019ll hold him accountable.
