George Stephanopoulos and ABC News have to pay a hefty fine to President-elect Donald Trump and apologize to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident that caused that fine and apology occurred when the anchor had a contentious interview in March with South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace, where he accused the president-elect of being a \u201crapist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve endorsed Donald Trump for president. Judges and two separate juries have found him liable for rape and for defaming the victim of that rape. How do you square your endorsement of Donald Trump with the testimony we just saw?\u201d he said to the representative after playing a clip of her talking about her assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, I will tell you. I was raped at the age of 16, and any rape victim will tell you- I\u2019ve lived for 30 years with an incredible amount of shame over being raped. I didn\u2019t come forward because of that judgment and shame that I felt, and it\u2019s a shame that you will never feel, George. And I\u2019m not going to sit here on your show and be asked a question meant to shame me about another potential rape victim. I\u2019m not going to do that,\u201d the representative said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s actually not about shaming you, it\u2019s a question about Donald Trump\u2026,\u201d the anchor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, you are shaming me,\u201d she hit back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve endorsed Donald Trump for president,\u201d the anchor said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRight,\u201d Mace confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDonald Trump has been found liable for rape by a jury. Donald Trump has been found liable for defaming the victim of that rape by a jury. It\u2019s been affirmed by a judge. It repeated the\u2026,\u201d the anchor pressed before she shredded him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was not a criminal court case, number one. Number two, I live with shame, and you\u2019re asking me a question about my political choices trying to shame me as a rape victim and find it disgusting,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd quite frankly, E. Jean Carroll\u2019s comments when she did get the judgment, joking about what she was going to buy, it doesn\u2019t \u2014 it makes it harder for women to come forward when they make a mockery out of rape. When they joke about it. It\u2019s not- it\u2019s not OK,\u201d Mace added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The president-elect sued for defamation after the interview and on Saturday the parties came to a settlement agreement that includes ABC News and Stephanopoulos paying a whopping $15 million fine as a charitable contribution to a \u201cPresidential foundation and museum to be established by or for Plaintiff, as Presidents of the United States of America have established in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They will also pay $1 million to cover the president-elect\u2019s attorney\u2019s fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ABC News also had to issue a statement of \u201cregret\u201d along with the story and video of the interview that were published on March 10, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cABC News and George Stephanopoulos regret statements regarding President Donald J. Trump made during an interview by George Stephanopoulos with Rep. Nancy Mace on ABC\u2019s This Week on March 10, 2024,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A spokesperson for ABC News said that it was \u201cpleased\u201d that the case had come to a close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit on the terms in the court filing,\u201d the spokesperson said<\/a> to Fox News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the president-elect first filed the lawsuit Stephanopoulos was cocky and defiant when he spoke to CBS late-night host Stephen Colbert and said that he wouldn\u2019t be \u201ccowed out of doing my job because of a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTrump sued me because I used the word \u2018rape,\u2019 even though a judge said that\u2019s in fact what did happen. We filed a motion to dismiss,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
