Insects That Can Get Under Your Skin: How to Remove Them and What Dangers They Can Cause

Some insects and tiny parasites can burrow into or attach themselves to human skin, sometimes causing irritation, swelling, itching, and infection. Ticks, mites, fleas, and certain tropical parasites are among the creatures that can affect the skin in different ways. While many insect bites cause only temporary discomfort, some can lead to more serious health problems if they are not treated properly. Recognizing the symptoms early is important for protecting your health.

Ticks are among the most common parasites that attach themselves to human skin. They use their mouthparts to hold onto the skin and feed on blood, sometimes remaining attached for several days. Some ticks can transmit infections such as Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. To remove one, use fine-tipped tweezers, grip it as close to the skin as possible, and pull upward slowly and steadily. Avoid twisting, squeezing, burning, or covering it with oil or petroleum jelly.

Other tiny parasites, including certain mites, can cause intense itching and skin irritation. Scabies mites, for example, burrow into the upper layer of the skin and lay eggs, causing an itchy rash that often becomes worse at night. Some tropical parasites, such as the sand flea, can also penetrate the skin and cause painful swelling, inflammation, and sometimes secondary infections. These conditions may require specific medical treatment rather than simple removal at home.

If you notice something attached to or moving beneath your skin, avoid digging into the area with needles, knives, or sharp objects. Wash the affected area gently with soap and water, and seek medical advice if you suspect a parasite has burrowed into your skin. A healthcare professional can identify the problem and recommend the correct treatment. Increasing redness, warmth, pus, severe pain, fever, or spreading swelling may indicate an infection and should not be ignored.

Prevention is just as important as treatment. Wear long sleeves and trousers when walking through tall grass or wooded areas, use an appropriate insect repellent, and check your skin carefully after spending time outdoors. Keep pets protected against fleas and ticks, and wash bedding regularly if mites or other parasites are suspected. Although most insect encounters are manageable, knowing how to recognize and respond to them can help prevent complications and protect your skin.
