The Crockpot Mistake That Could Damage Your Kitchen Appliance

Slow cookers make preparing meals simple and convenient, but one common mistake can damage your appliance and create a safety hazard: placing the removable Crockpot directly on a stovetop burner. Although it may look sturdy, most traditional slow cooker inserts are not designed to withstand direct heat.

A typical slow cooker has two main parts: a removable ceramic or stoneware pot and an electric heating base. The base provides gentle, even heat, while a stovetop burner produces intense, concentrated temperatures. Placing the ceramic insert on a burner can cause it to crack or break because of sudden temperature changes, a problem known as thermal shock.

A cracked pot can spill hot food and cause serious burns. Even if the insert appears strong, never assume it is stovetop-safe. Only use it on a burner if the manufacturer specifically states that it is designed for that purpose. Some modern multi-cookers have this feature, but most traditional Crockpots do not.

If a recipe calls for browning meat, sautéing onions, or cooking vegetables before slow cooking, use a regular skillet instead. Transfer the ingredients into the slow cooker afterward. If your ceramic insert accidentally gets too hot, turn off the burner and let it cool naturally. Never pour cold water over a hot pot, as this can cause it to crack. Checking the manufacturer’s instructions can help prevent costly damage and keep your kitchen safe.
