Head lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp and feed on small amounts of blood. They can affect both children and adults, often causing itching and irritation. Their eggs, called nits, attach firmly to individual hair strands, making them difficult to remove. Although head lice can be frustrating, they are not a sign of poor hygiene and can usually be treated successfully with the right approach.
One of the most effective ways to remove lice is wet combing with a fine-toothed lice comb. Start by washing the hair with regular shampoo and applying plenty of conditioner. Divide the hair into small sections and carefully comb from the roots to the ends, paying special attention to the areas behind the ears and around the neck. Clean the comb after each stroke and repeat until all sections have been checked thoroughly.
Pharmacy treatments, including special lotions and shampoos, can also help eliminate head lice. Always follow the product instructions carefully, as some treatments require a second application to kill newly hatched lice. Ask a pharmacist or healthcare professional for advice when treating young children, pregnant women, or cases that do not respond to treatment.
After treatment, continue checking and combing the hair every few days to remove remaining lice and nits. Check household members and treat anyone who has an active infestation. Wash recently used pillowcases, hats, and bedding, and clean combs and brushes. There is no need to disinfect the entire home or use insecticide sprays. With patience and proper treatment, head lice can be eliminated effectively.
