Should You Contribute to Your Coworker’s Gas?

If a coworker drives you to work every day, especially if they pick you up or make a detour for you, offering to contribute toward gas is generally a thoughtful and fair gesture. You may not be legally required to pay, but regular rides involve more than fuel—they also use the driver’s time, vehicle, and effort. A shared commute works best when both people feel the arrangement is balanced.

There is no need to calculate every mile or split every expense. If your coworker already travels the same route, a reasonable weekly or monthly contribution toward fuel may be enough. If they regularly leave earlier, drive farther, or make a special trip to pick you up, contributing a little more could be appropriate. The goal is simply to recognize the convenience you are receiving.

It is also worth remembering that driving costs include maintenance, tires, insurance, repairs, and depreciation. You do not necessarily need to cover half of those expenses, but acknowledging the overall cost of driving can help show appreciation. A simple conversation can prevent misunderstandings and make expectations clear.

The easiest approach is to say, “I really appreciate you driving me to work. I’d like to contribute something for gas—what would you think is fair?” If your coworker refuses money, you could occasionally buy coffee or lunch, or give them a gas-station gift card. The important thing is to offer rather than assume the rides should always be free.
