Omaha police were injured during a shootout with a suspect at a QuikTrip gas station after an earlier shooting. Three officers were hurt, the suspect was killed, and all officer injuries were non-life-threatening

A violent sequence of events shook South Omaha on Wednesday afternoon, ending with three police officers injured and a suspected gunman dead. The incident began shortly after noon inside Phil’s Foodway, a neighborhood grocery store, where a 61-year-old man was shot multiple times in the chest. Panic spread as customers and employees fled for cover while police rushed to the scene.

Officers arrived to find the victim seriously wounded but alive. Authorities later confirmed his injuries were not life-threatening, crediting the rapid emergency response. Witness information quickly pointed police toward a suspect in his late 20s who had fled the store, triggering an immediate and coordinated search across the area.

Police soon located the suspect’s vehicle and followed it to a QuikTrip gas station near 32nd and L Streets, a busy location with customers inside. When officers attempted to make contact, the suspect ran from his car into the store, creating an urgent threat to civilians. Officers moved swiftly to secure the area and evacuate as many people as possible.

The situation escalated when the suspect barricaded himself inside a restroom. Police say he opened fire during attempts to negotiate, striking two officers and injuring a third with shrapnel. A civilian inside the area managed to escape unharmed as officers continued to engage under extremely dangerous conditions.

Officers ultimately returned fire, killing the suspect and ending the threat. All three injured officers were taken to a local hospital and are expected to recover. They were placed on critical incident leave while an independent investigation began, as required in officer-involved shootings.

City and state leaders praised the officers’ actions, saying their decisions likely prevented further loss of life. Streets were closed for hours during the investigation, and the incident has left the community grappling with renewed concerns about public safety and violent crime.
