I Thought the White String in My Egg Was Dangerous—The Truth Surprised Me

Cracking open an egg and finding a strange white, rope-like strand inside can be alarming. It may look like a worm or contamination, especially if you have never seen one before. However, this unusual-looking feature is actually a completely normal part of the egg.

The white strand is called a chalaza, a natural structure made of protein that helps keep the yolk centered inside the egg. It is not a parasite, mold, or sign that the egg has gone bad. The chalaza is also safe to eat and does not need to be removed before cooking, although some people take it out for aesthetic reasons.

Interestingly, a clearly visible chalaza can indicate that an egg is relatively fresh because it becomes less noticeable as the egg ages. Other harmless variations, such as cloudy egg whites, small blood spots, or differences in yolk color, can also occur naturally and do not automatically mean an egg is unsafe.

When checking an egg for spoilage, look for genuine warning signs such as a strong rotten smell, unusual discoloration, mold, an abnormal texture, or a cracked and contaminated shell. A white strand attached to the yolk alone is generally nothing to fear. What may initially look alarming is often simply a fascinating part of how an egg naturally develops.
