8 Everyday Appliances That Quietly Waste Electricity When They’re Plugged In

Many electronics continue using small amounts of electricity even when they appear to be turned off. This is often called standby power or a “phantom load,” which keeps features such as clocks, displays, memory, and remote-control functions active. While the energy use of one device may be small, dozens of plugged-in electronics can gradually increase household electricity consumption.

You do not necessarily need to unplug everything in your home. Instead, focus on devices that remain connected for long periods without being used. Computers, laptops, gaming consoles, cable boxes, and DVRs can continue drawing power while in standby mode. Older electronics may be particularly inefficient and consume more electricity when left connected.

Small kitchen appliances can also contribute to unnecessary energy use. Microwaves often draw power for their displays and controls, while coffee makers, air fryers, and other countertop appliances may consume electricity when plugged in. Phone chargers are another simple example—unplugging them after use can prevent unnecessary standby consumption.

For convenience, consider using power strips or smart plugs for groups of electronics. One switch can disconnect several devices at once, making it easier to reduce standby energy without constantly reaching behind furniture. Unplugging selected appliances when they are not needed can help lower wasted electricity and, over time, potentially reduce your energy bill.
