Jessica Tarlov Takes a Break After Trump Criticism—But Her Absence Has a Simple Explanation

Fox News commentator Jessica Tarlov recently stepped away from The Five after President Donald Trump publicly criticized her on Truth Social. Trump’s comments followed a discussion on the program in which Tarlov argued that stronger gun-control measures could potentially help prevent some mass shootings, while acknowledging that no law could eliminate every act of violence.

Tarlov has frequently been a liberal voice on The Five, where she regularly debates conservative co-hosts including Greg Gutfeld, Jesse Watters, and Jeanine Pirro. Trump has criticized her commentary in the past, making his latest remarks another public clash between the president and the Fox News contributor.

Despite the timing, Tarlov’s temporary absence from television does not appear to be connected to Trump’s criticism or any change in her position at Fox News. Instead, she traveled to Lanai, Hawaii, with her husband, Brian McKenna, to attend a friend’s wedding. Tarlov shared photographs from the trip on social media, describing it as a quick getaway with her husband.

Her vacation comes as Fox News continues to dominate cable-news ratings. According to the figures cited in the original report, the network averaged more than 2.3 million viewers during July 2026 primetime, significantly ahead of CNN and MS NOW. The Five also remained among the most-watched cable-news programs, leading the ratings with more than 3 million viewers.

Tarlov’s brief break therefore appears to be exactly that—a vacation rather than a professional setback. While her public disagreements with Trump continue to attract attention, her time away from the studio was reportedly planned around a personal event. She is expected to return to the political debates and heated discussions that have made her a familiar presence on The Five.
