What to Do If You Find a Snake Inside Your Home

Finding a snake inside your home can be alarming, but snakes usually enter buildings while searching for food, shelter, warmth, or relief from extreme weather. Small openings around doors, windows, pipes, garages, and foundations can provide easy access. Homes with rodents or insects may also attract snakes because these animals can provide a convenient food source.

If you discover a snake indoors, stay calm and do not attempt to grab, corner, or kill it. Keep children and pets away and maintain a safe distance. If possible, close doors that lead to other parts of the house without approaching the snake. Because identifying a snake incorrectly can be dangerous, contacting a local wildlife professional is often the safest option.

After the snake has been safely removed, inspect your home for possible entry points. Check gaps around doors, windows, vents, pipes, and foundations, and seal openings where appropriate. It is also helpful to remove piles of debris, clutter, and other potential hiding places around the property.

Pay attention to signs of rodents and insects as well. Reducing these food sources can make your property less attractive to snakes. Keeping grass trimmed, storing materials neatly, and maintaining the area around the home can also reduce places where snakes might hide.

Most importantly, avoid panic and unnecessary contact. A snake inside your home does not automatically mean you are in immediate danger, but caution is important because some species can be venomous. The safest approach is to keep your distance, protect children and pets, and seek professional assistance when necessary.
