Florida Deputy Robert Pounds expected a routine traffic stop when he saw a vehicle traveling 63 mph in a 45 mph zone in Naples around 4:30 a.m. But when he approached the car, driver Wilfrid Jean-Louis explained that his wife, Fabienne Gorges, was in labor and they were desperately trying to reach the hospital.

Pounds quickly called for paramedics and additional assistance, but the situation moved faster than expected. Fabienne was about to give birth, leaving little time to wait for emergency crews to arrive. The deputy grabbed a blanket and stepped in to help deliver the baby on the roadside.

Despite the unexpected circumstances, Pounds focused on keeping both mother and newborn safe. He helped Fabienne through the delivery and checked that the baby was breathing while they waited for medical professionals. When paramedics arrived, they took over, cut the umbilical cord, and transported mother and daughter to the hospital for further care.

Pounds later joked that police officers hear plenty of explanations for speeding, but acknowledged that this was certainly a “pretty reasonable excuse.” The unusual encounter quickly became a memorable story for everyone involved.

The story became even more meaningful when the family reportedly named their daughter Leila Robert Jean-Louis, honoring the deputy who helped during her unexpected roadside arrival.
