At 94, a Widower Built a Backyard Pool to Turn Loneliness Into Community

After losing his wife of 66 years, 94-year-old Keith Davison found himself facing a kind of silence he had never experienced before. The retired judge struggled with loneliness and realized that spending his days alone in the house was making his grief even harder to bear.

Rather than retreating from the world, Keith decided to create something that would bring people—and especially laughter—back into his life. He built a large swimming pool in his backyard, measuring about 32 feet long and reaching 9 feet deep beneath the diving board.

But Keith had no intention of keeping the pool just for himself. Once construction was complete, he invited neighborhood children and their families to come over and swim. His simple rule was that a responsible adult had to be present whenever children were in the pool, helping keep the gatherings safe and enjoyable.

The idea quickly transformed Keith’s backyard into a lively gathering place. Instead of sitting alone and staring at the walls, he was surrounded by children playing, families visiting, and the sounds of a community coming together. Although he never had grandchildren of his own, Keith said he had essentially “adopted” the neighborhood children.

What began as an unusual response to grief became a beautiful example of how connection can help ease loneliness. Keith didn’t erase his loss, but he found a new sense of purpose by opening his home and creating a place where others could feel welcome. Sometimes, healing can begin with something as simple as giving people a reason to come together.
