Discovering a pink, hard, unusual object sticking out of a wall can be unsettling. At first glance, it might resemble mold, fungus, or even something biological. But color alone cannot tell you what an unknown substance is, and several ordinary household materials can sometimes create surprisingly strange-looking formations.

One possible explanation is expanding spray foam. Often used for insulation and sealing gaps, construction foam can squeeze through small cracks or openings before hardening. Once fully cured, it may become firm, lightweight, and rough or crunchy. If the object appears to be emerging from a hole or gap in the wall, construction material could be worth considering.

Moisture is another important clue. Although pink or orange-colored microbial growth can occur in damp environments, typical mold is not usually a dry, hard lump. Look for additional signs such as water stains, peeling paint, dampness, or a musty odor. If the wall is completely dry and shows no evidence of moisture, another explanation may be more likely.

Other possibilities include old adhesive, dried biological material, insects, animal activity, or debris that has worked its way through an opening. Pay attention to the object’s texture and location, as well as signs such as tiny holes, droppings, scratching sounds, or repeated appearances. These details can provide more useful clues than color alone.

If you discover something unfamiliar, avoid immediately touching, crushing, or scraping it. Take clear photographs from different angles and note whether it is soft, hard, dry, damp, smooth, or brittle. If it continues appearing or you notice water damage, pests, strong odors, or another potential hazard, consider having the area inspected by a qualified professional. Sometimes the strangest discoveries inside a home have surprisingly ordinary explanations.
