Thomas Fahmy was walking through a rainy Staten Island neighborhood when a terrifying moment unfolded. The congressional staffer was heading to a dentist appointment while carrying an umbrella when lightning suddenly struck him near his parked car. Doorbell-camera footage captured Fahmy collapsing onto the pavement just feet from the vehicle.

Despite the frightening impact, Fahmy remained conscious. He later described experiencing an intense burning sensation along with tingling, numbness, and severe pain, particularly in both feet. After lying on the ground for several moments, he called for help, and a nearby resident heard his cries and immediately contacted emergency services.

Paramedics transported Fahmy to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital, where doctors monitored him overnight. The following day, he was released. What amazed Fahmy and those around him was that medical examinations reportedly found no visible burns or significant injuries despite the lightning strike.

The experience left Fahmy deeply grateful. He later said he went to church to thank God for surviving the frightening incident. His employer, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, also expressed relief and gratitude to the neighbor who called 911 and to the medical professionals who provided emergency care.

For Fahmy, the experience became a powerful reminder not to take life for granted. He encouraged others to appreciate the simple moments, smile, breathe fresh air, and avoid allowing everyday stress to become overwhelming. Lightning strikes remain extremely rare, but Fahmy’s survival shows just how unpredictable and powerful nature can be.
