Six Inmates Could Have Walked Away—Instead, They Saved a Collapsed Deputy

Six Georgia inmates found themselves in an unexpected situation when the sheriff’s deputy supervising their cemetery work crew suddenly collapsed. The men had spent months working alongside the deputy, developing a familiar routine during long shifts. But when he began coughing, overheating, and struggling to keep going, they quickly realized something was seriously wrong.

Instead of leaving him behind, all six inmates immediately rushed to help. They removed the deputy’s heavy ballistic vest to help cool him down and used his cellphone to call 911. One of the men later recalled that the deputy appeared unconscious for about a minute and was breathing heavily when he began to regain consciousness.

Emergency responders soon arrived and took over the deputy’s care. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office praised the inmates for their quick response, noting that they had not abandoned the officer during the emergency. Their actions helped ensure that medical assistance was summoned without unnecessary delay.

What happened afterward was unusual. Polk County Sheriff Johnny Moats announced that the six inmates would receive sentence reductions of about 25 percent as recognition for their actions. The department had provisions for reducing sentences for inmate workers who demonstrated exceptional conduct or went beyond their expected responsibilities.

The deputy’s recovery was later celebrated with a lunch at a local park, with his family providing food and desserts for the group. The incident became a powerful reminder that courage and compassion can appear in unexpected places. Although the six men were serving sentences, when someone they knew needed help, they didn’t hesitate—and their decision ultimately gave them a chance to return to their lives sooner.
