For nine terrifying days, darkness, mud, and uncertainty filled the flooded tunnels of Nepal’s Trishuli 3A Hydropower Project. Rescue teams worked their way through the damaged passages, facing dangerous conditions and little reason to believe anyone trapped inside could still be alive. Then, against the odds, rescuers made an extraordinary discovery: Sanjaya Shah and Kabir Maharjan were found alive.

Both men had suffered injuries to their hands and legs, but rescuers managed to bring them out of the tunnel. They were then airlifted to a hospital in Kathmandu for medical treatment. Their survival offered a remarkable moment of hope during a disaster that had already caused devastating loss and left families desperately waiting for news.

The rescue, however, did not end the tragedy. After reaching the area, rescuers discovered the body of another person who appeared to have been caught in the flood while trying to escape. Search teams working in nearby hydropower tunnels have also recovered additional victims as authorities continue the difficult process of identifying those who died.

For nine days, the two men had remained trapped in conditions that seemed almost impossible to survive. The darkness, flooding, injuries, and isolation made their eventual rescue all the more remarkable. When they finally emerged into daylight, it became one of the few moments of hope to emerge from the devastating operation.
