Leaving a phone charger plugged into the wall when your device isn’t connected may seem completely harmless. Most modern, high-quality chargers use only a small amount of electricity while idle, and the risk is generally low. However, damaged, poorly made, or counterfeit adapters can develop electrical problems and overheat, making a simple habit worth reconsidering.
Where you place a charger matters, too. An adapter covered by a pillow, blanket, clothing, or bedding may not have enough ventilation to release heat. Keeping chargers on a hard, open surface allows heat to escape and reduces the chance of overheating during use.
It’s also important to recognize warning signs. A charger that becomes unusually hot, produces buzzing or crackling sounds, gives off a strange smell, shows discoloration, or has a frayed cable should no longer be used. Even if it still charges your phone, visible damage or unusual behavior can indicate an electrical problem.
Unplugging chargers when they aren’t needed can also reduce small amounts of wasted electricity. One idle adapter usually consumes very little, but several chargers and other devices left connected continuously can add up over time. Disconnecting them also removes the adapters from the electrical supply when they’re not being used.
The safest approach is simple: use a reputable, safety-certified charger, keep it uncovered and properly ventilated, and unplug it when practical after charging. Avoid overloaded outlets and regularly inspect cables and adapters for damage. A few seconds spent unplugging a charger may seem insignificant, but it can be a sensible way to reduce unnecessary energy use and avoid potential electrical hazards.
