Is Sleeping on Your Right Side Bad for You? Here’s the Truth

Sleeping on your right side is generally considered safe, and for many people, it is simply a comfortable way to rest. However, your sleeping position can make a difference if you experience nighttime acid reflux or digestive discomfort. Some people may notice that reflux symptoms become worse when lying on the right side, especially after eating shortly before going to bed.

One reason may be the position of the stomach and the effects of gravity. When you lie on your right side, stomach contents may be more likely to move toward the esophagus, potentially increasing acid exposure. By contrast, research suggests that sleeping on the left side can reduce nighttime acid reflux for some people by helping keep stomach contents lower.

Acid reflux occurs when stomach contents flow back into the esophagus. It can cause a burning sensation in the chest, a sour taste, or discomfort after eating. Symptoms may become more noticeable at night, particularly after large meals or foods and drinks that trigger reflux.

Fortunately, a few simple habits may help. Try leaving several hours between your evening meal and bedtime, avoid foods that consistently worsen your symptoms, and consider raising the upper part of your body if recommended by a healthcare professional. Changing to your left side may also be worth trying if right-side sleeping seems to aggravate your symptoms.

If you sleep comfortably on your right side and rarely experience reflux, there is generally no reason to force yourself to change positions. But if heartburn or other reflux symptoms happen frequently, experimenting with your sleeping position may help. Persistent, severe, or worsening symptoms should be discussed with a healthcare professional, since frequent reflux can sometimes require treatment.
