Oklahoma Liquor Store Stands by Controversial “Pull Your Pants Up” Sign

A liquor store in Oklahoma City sparked controversy after posting a blunt message on its front door: “Pull your pants up or don’t come in!” The sign targeted customers who wore sagging pants that exposed their underwear or buttocks. Store management defended the policy, saying the clothing style was disrespectful and inappropriate for the business.

Managers told local media at the time that the sign was introduced after repeatedly seeing customers enter the store with their pants hanging well below their waist. Chad Gilbert, one of the managers, acknowledged that sagging pants may be considered a fashion choice but said he personally found it offensive and believed customers should show some basic respect for others.

Not everyone agreed. Customer Sunshine Weatherby questioned whether a liquor store was the right place to lecture people about decency. However, she also acknowledged that the business had the right to establish rules for its customers, provided those rules were applied fairly. She said the issue would become more serious if the policy were used to discriminate against people based on race.

Employees also claimed that sagging clothing could create security concerns. Shana Wiessner said staff members paid closer attention to customers whose pants were sagging because they believed bottles could potentially be concealed in loose clothing. The store maintained that its policy was about behavior and security rather than targeting a particular group.

The sign, originally reported in 2017, remains an example of how a simple dress-code rule can quickly become a debate about personal expression, respect, and discrimination. Some people saw the store’s message as reasonable, while others considered it unnecessarily judgmental. Ultimately, the controversy raised a broader question: when a business sets rules about appearance, where should the line be drawn between maintaining standards and unfairly judging customers?
