For 43 years, my father collected my mother’s entire paycheck every Friday. As a child, I believed he was controlling her. I watched her give up a beautiful coat, new shoes, and seaside trips because he always insisted they couldn’t afford them. Whenever I questioned her, she simply said, “Nothing is the way it appears.”

After I moved away, I offered to help my mother open her own bank account, but she refused. Even after my father retired, he kept collecting her pension and storing it in an old metal box.
