You unplug your phone and leave the charger in the wall, assuming it is no longer doing anything. However, a plugged-in charger can still draw a small amount of electricity even when no phone is connected. This is often called “standby power” or “phantom power.” One charger will not make a major difference to your electricity bill, but several unused devices can add up over time.

A charger can also produce a small amount of heat while it remains connected. Modern chargers from reputable manufacturers include safety features, so simply leaving one plugged in does not mean it will cause a fire. Still, heat can become a problem when a charger is damaged, covered by clothing or bedding, or placed somewhere with poor ventilation. Never put a charger under a pillow, blanket, rug, or other material that can trap heat.

The condition and quality of a charger are especially important. Damaged, counterfeit, or poorly made chargers may lack important safety protections. Watch for exposed wires, cracks, burn marks, discoloration, loose connections, unusual smells, strange noises, or excessive heat. If you notice any of these warning signs, stop using the charger and replace it rather than taking a chance.

It is also important to remember that a single phone charger is not normally enough to overload a household circuit. Larger appliances such as space heaters, kettles, hair dryers, ovens, and air conditioners use much more electricity. Electrical problems are more commonly linked to damaged equipment, defective outlets, overheating, or poor-quality components.

Unplugging a charger when you no longer need it is therefore a simple precaution. It can eliminate a small amount of standby electricity use and removes one unnecessary electrical device from the outlet. While a quality charger does not automatically become dangerous simply because it is plugged in, making a habit of unplugging unused chargers is an easy way to practice safer electrical habits at home.
